There used to be a world of little things, a weird world of tomorrow with semiconductor wafers. Those little wafers are what make our electronic gadgetsrun smoother and faster.
Semiconductor wafers are to the types of gadgets most of us use every day — whether smartphones, laptops, tablets or flat-screen TVs — what bricks are to a house. They are made from materials that can carry electricity, such as silicon. They’re really thin, superflat — like a shiny tiny plate.
We’re guessing you don’t know enough about those semiconductors, the stuff that is the brains of our electronics. They control the way electricity flows through a device, and make sure it functions as it should. Without semiconductor wafers, our devices — not tomention the cool things we can do with them, likeplay games,take pictures or send text messageto friends — would be impossible.
For semiconductor wafers, scientists and engineers just keep coming up with new ideas on how to improve our devices. The wafers are used to createfaster processors, smaller chipsand more powerful gadgets. This virtuous cycle of innovation is dramatically increasing how fast our technology is getting better faster, and, consequently, how much better and more fun our lives are becoming.
Thousands of layers of different materials make up semiconductor wafers, each one having a specific job. These layers are accumulatedin a clean, dustless room, as a way of ensuring that the wafers work well. Next are etched tiny electroniccircuits that make them even more powerful.
And these semiconductor wafers are why we can make the machines we thought we would never be able to make. All of these things are made possible by semiconductor wafers, from smart refrigerators that know when to restock themselves to self-driving cars that know when and where to drive. Our world would look very different without these.
